Catfish lose late in O’Fallon

O’Fallon, MO – May 27, 2025

The 2025 season has begun for the Catfish and it has been fast and furious and Mother Nature has been a participant. The Catfish started out on the road at O’Fallon and we’re masterful on the mound until the end. Catfish 3rd year returner, #12 Jorge Romero(Western Illinois), got the baseball to begin the season.

In typical Romero style, he kept the catfish close allowing 2 runs, one earned, in the first three innings. He walked three and struck out four and the Catfish trailed 2-1 when he departed. In came the craftly lefty from Missouri State, Drew Wedgeworth. Wedge is back for his second summer with the Fish and he was unhittable. Wedgeworth tossed 4.1 innings allowing only one hit. He walked no one and struck out seven Hoots, he was perfect in his 2025 debut. “I’m just getting to know this team,” said new head coach Gary McClure. “I can see why they brought back these two arms!”

The Catfish tied the score in 7th when new Catfish outfielder Nathan Bowie (Harding University), hit a bomb over the centerfield wall. The Catfish took the lead in the 8th when they plated two more and held a 4-2 advantage when the Hoots came to bat in the bottom of the 9th. That’s when the wheels fell off. The catfish would give up 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th, walks, an error and a walk off single and the Hoots win their home opener and spoil the season opener for the Cape Catfish.

“Tough one tonight,” said head coach Gary McClure. “We’re still learning about our team and we have some guys playing out of place, we’ll be fine.”

The Catfish don’t have any time to worry about this one as they head to Marion, Illinois tomorrow to take on the Thrillbillies.
